A good friend of mine just started her own business running a yoga and ski retreat. She was nervous before she started (as is normal), and went through a period of doubt and procrastination. She went through, and came out the other side of, overwhelm paralysis – where you have so much to do that you get frozen in one place.
I’ve been working with her and helping her with the overwhelm, and I’m so pleased to say that in the last week, she has filled her first two retreat places. Hooray! Now, her retreat isn’t cheap. It’s in a 5-star lodge, in beautiful surroundings. It comes with a fairly high ticket price. But here’s the thing that she has learned, and what I want to share with you today: Someone, somewhere, needs what you are offering. Someone, somewhere, needs your skill. Guaranteed. So whether you’re:
My story… A few years ago, I was desperately looking for my passion/purpose (or just any job I truly loved). I took a lot of tests and filled out a heap of questionnaires. With questions like:
Now, my answer to all those questions was always something along the lines of: “I love encouraging my friends to go after their dreams. I love finding ways they can go after their goals. If I could do anything in the world and get paid for it, I would get paid to cheer people on.” Sounds ridiculous, hey?! I certainly thought so. Who gets paid to cheer people on?! And yet, I now run an accountability program where I do just that. I get paid to cheer people on with their goals and dreams. And I love it! Now, I’m just starting out - I have a long journey ahead of me. I’m not making millions right now. But it’s a start. My point is that there are people out there who need my skills. And there are people out there who need your skills – whatever they are. (And don’t say you don’t have any. Everyone has a skill.) So, take heart. Whatever you’re working on, there is someone who needs what you are creating.
Someone, somewhere, needs your skill. So how are you going to share it with the world? Perhaps you’ll just share it with your friends – that’s totally fine. (Making them laugh, cheering them on, being supportive…) Perhaps you’ll share it with your local community: Playing in a band, singing in a choir, running an event, or volunteering as a cheerleader for runners in your local marathon. Perhaps you’ll share it further afield, or online across the world... All of these are fine. Don’t get disheartened by what you are doing or creating. Someone, somewhere, needs your skill. And now over to you! I’d love to know: 1. If you could get paid to do anything in the world, what would you do? 2. What are you really good at? What do your friends come to you for? Let me know in the comments. 'Cause whether it’s:
Someone, somewhere, needs it :) Claire PS: Speaking of inspiring people, I recently got to interview one of my heroes, Alex Franzen. Check out the interview here, where she talks about writing her new book and how she made it happen. I hope it provides some inspiration for you!

Thanks Priscilla, your words made my day! And I'm so pleased you are giving the writing a go. Keep on with it if you enjoy it. I know what you mean about the creative gift ideas - it is a skill not everyone has!

I love this post. If I could get paid to do anything, it'd be what I'm doing right now: writing a novel. It feels a bit like running through fresh snow: often uncomfortable, but also strangely thrilling.
