One of the hardest (but most important) things you'll ever do

The blog post I wrote last week obviously hit a chord (which is funny, because I didn’t think it was one of my better ones. *Note to self: we are not always the best judges of our own work!)
Lots of people emailed me to say it had helped them in some way, which is fantastic.

It’s one of the best things you can hear as a writer!

More than that, the replies I got made my day.

I’ve been going through a tough time lately (which I might share in a future newsletter), and those emails helped keep me going.

So, a quick reminder:

The small things you do (like sending an email) can make a HUGE difference to someone else.

  • The positive feedback you give to a store manager about a member of staff;

  • The email you send to a writer saying how much you love their work;

  • The (genuine) compliment you give to someone on the street.

They might not seem like much, but they can change a person’s entire day!

Small bursts of kindness can create BIG results.

But - there's more to it...

The people reading this blog post likely already do this kind of thing.

I expect you already tell people they’re doing a great job, or send thanks when someone has helped you.

So let's turn this round:

In the same way, send yourself kindness.

What does this mean? Well, it could be anything:

  • Getting takeout one night when you’re tired and have had a rough week, without beating yourself up.

  • Removing a task from your to-do list.

  • Taking half an hour for yourself, to do whatever YOU want to do.

  • Saying “no” to someone or something.

Don’t forget yourself in the process. Show yourself a moment of kindness each day.

It might sound weird. (And if it does... all the more reason to do it!)

It's not always easy - but it’s important.

If you’re always cheering other people on, or being there for other people, be there for yourself as well.

We’re going to be with ourselves our whole lives. Might as well be friends with ourselves, hey?!

How could you be kind to yourself today?

What does being kind to YOU look like?

And, if you were as kind to yourself as you are to your best friends, how would your day (or mental chatter) change?

Finally, just for laughs, because I love this so much... if you think you’re having a bad day...

Love,

Claire
