How to avoid looking at someone else's life with envy

One of my family members works as a lawyer and gets paid ‘big bucks’.

But they occasionally work all-nighters (they go to work on Monday morning, work right though, and come home on Tuesday evening – still in the same clothes).
...

I live in Canada and am applying for my Canadian citizenship, which means I’ll have two passports (one of my ‘life goals”).

But I don’t get to see my family and friends in the UK much. I’ve only met my 18-month old niece once.

...

One of my ex-colleagues travels the world with her husband’s job.

But it means she has to pack up and start over every few years: make new friends… get to know a new area… and then start again.

...

One of my friends is single and goes to parties and glamorous events every week.

But she has no one to give her a hug when she gets home at night.

...

None of these are judgments.

They’re all facts.

Because there are pros and cons to everything.

Every single thing.

There is no right and wrong.

Just whatever works for you.

So don’t worry about your life choices.

For every amazing event you see on your friend’s Facebook page, there is a negative side, for sure.

I don’t mean that to sound depressing!

What I mean is, see the overview:

There are pros and cons to:

  • Having kids young
  • Having kids when you’re older
  • Not having kids at all
  • Buying a house
  • Going travelling
  • Putting your career first
  • Doing a job for the love of it
  • Owning your own business
  • Working for “the man”

There is no right or wrong answer.

No “correct way” of doing things.

There will always be pros and cons, to any life choice you make.

So do what feels right for you!

Go with what works... for you.

And know that whatever your choice, there will always be a 'pro' and a 'con' attached to it.

And that’s okay; it’s part of life.

So give yourself a break :)

Know that whatever path you’ve chosen, there will be good and bad aspects.

And it's the same for everyone.

But that’s the beautiful thing about life:

We’re free to make our own choices.

We’re free to learn from the mistakes that come from those choices.

And we’re free to change course, whenever we like.

And now your turn - I’d love to know…

  1. What are some "pros" of your situation you might not have thought about?

  2. What "cons" might you be missing when you see someone's 'amazing' life?

Let me know in the comments below.

There are no right or wrong answers.

Only doing what feels right for you :)

With hugs and hot chocolate,

Claire

Let's see, pros: I don't have a corporate job, so I can wear comfy clothes and not spend a fortune on a wardrobe, and I don't have to travel away from my bestie (my sweet husband).<3

Cons of "amazing" lives: Paparazzi, yikes, it must be scary to be a celebrity! And then, this is kind of quirky, but imagine being rich and driving a fancy car. I'd be worried wherever I park it that someone would door ding it or even steal it!

Awesome - I LOVE this! Love your list of pros (and that your husband is your bestie :) A lot of people desire to leave the corporate world, and wear what clothes they like!

Ha yes, I think I'd hate to be a celebrity. So funny - I have the same thoughts about expensive cars! Whenever I see one I can appreciate their beauty, but then I think "imagine the insurance lol", or what if someone keyed it!

Even celebrities and rich people have issues! :)
